Deep in the heart of Vila Madalena, Batman lives. He is kind of strange version of himself, but has lent his name to the place none the less.
São Paulo is no stranger to street art, or graffiti, but this particular alley has become particularly well-known. Perhaps it is the quantity, or the quality, or the fact that it is some type of alleyway. But this slightly more diminutive street has taken on a culture all its own. It is a popular place for photo shoots and the skateboarding crowd to hang out, and apparently also a popular thoroughfare for cars.
For the rest of São Paulo, street art has often taken the place of advertisements. Banned throughout the city, walls and signs and sides of buildings are adorned with every type of painting, or tag available. Some major urban artists are invited (or not…) to paint magnificent murals in prominent locations, others are done where ever space can be found. But the Beco do Batman seems to be a place where art is just art, and styles and backgrounds and people mix.
